Maquiave. Política. Poder. Sociedade. ABSTRACT This text analyzes character king Claudius’ behaviors and political strategies in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, articulating these behaviors and strategies to literary and political studies. Through Shakespearean critical studies, considered by some authors as canonical, we could reach a character conclusion by comparing his conduct on the play to Machiavelli’s masterpiece Il Prince. This comparison has helped us to understand King Claudius in Shakespeare’s plays and how his discourse as a king was based on a seductive language. The comparison between a bellicose and a seductive image, between the two kings’ images, has shown how necessary the works of Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau are and their great relevance to understand the throne modification in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. About King Claudius’ Character evolution, the proposed discussions suggested a balance between his dissimulator personality and the techniques used by him to maintain the kingdom power, a conclusion based on the Shakespearean theory. At the same time, this article also aims at comparing the Claudius performance to the leadership theory created by Machiavelli. Characterizing king Claudius as a usurper can be considered a poor representation of his role in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Claudius’ behavior needs to be (re)read by taking into account the transition between the state of nature to the social contract. Keywords: Shakespeare. Machiavelli. Policy. Power. Society. |
