Resumo: It is commonly believed, among commentators on the philosophy of the young Nietzsche, that Socratic thought is considered there to be an exacerbated development of the Apollonian instinct. Analyzing the significance of the concept of principium individuationis (the principle of individuation) as presented in The Birth of Tragedy, we discuss Nietzsche’s main arguments so as to show how problematic in his thought is this approximation of the rational-philosophical tendency (which is most developed in Socrates) to one of the artistic instincts of our nature, as the Apollonian phenomenon is.
