ABSTRACT German educators in the Tropics: the “Beneditinas” of Santa Gertrudes Academy. v. 17, n. 1, p. 25-40, jan./jun. 1989. The end of the last century marked the beginning of a profitable educational activity of foreign religious people who settled schools in Recife. The “Benediti¬nas” of the Santa Gertrudes Academy. Olinda, PE, arrived at Brazil in 1903, and they were the first ones to obtain the official recognition for the courses which they maintained and the musical conservatoire that was also recognized. The special education offered by the Academy, was shown troughout the years and it was much more complete than the official and non official teaching and the religious instruction proposed by her missionary project. It tries to rescue the peculiar aspect of that educational process of that school, starting from the re-interpretation of the facts and uses which describe the “Modus Vivendi” and the set of values of the dayly life mainly in the first half of the century. |
