HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF AN ACCOUNTANT'S RESPONSIBILITIES

Resumo: | The choice of a profession is undoubtedly one of the most important decisions in a person's life. Having adequate information, free of stereotypes and biases is also important, both for the professional future, and for society in general that will utilize the services the professional will render. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the skills and knowledge that high school students deem necessary for the accountant, as well as compare if such skills and knowledge are converging to those recommended by the IFAC (International Federation of Accountants), which aims to improve the profession and the accounting professionals. The survey was conducted with high school students in the year 2013. The population comprised of 12 public schools, located in the city of Uberlândia-MG, with 841 respondents. The results showed that the perception of high school students converges to many skills described by the IFAC, with greater agreement for technical and functional skills. The findings of this study indicate that students do not know the extent of the area of expertise of professionals in accounting, which may affect their choice of the profession. It is concluded that there is a stereotype in relation to the Accounting Professional, considering that the students understand that the accountant works mainly with contents of the area of exact sciences, which can intimidate those who do not like such area. Thus, the study contributes by promoting reflection and dissemination of the skills and knowledge provided by accounting education related bodies, involving the perception of high school students, future professionals, as to the performance of the Accounting Professional. |

Poseer informaciones adecuadas, libres de estereotipos y vieses es igualmente importante, tanto para el futuro profesional, cuanto para la sociedad en general que irá disfrutar de los servicios por él prestados. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las habilidades y conocimientos que los alumnos de enseñanza media juzgan necesarios para la actuación del contador, bien como comparar si tales habilidades y conocimientos son convergentes para aquellos preconizados por IFAC (International Federation of Accountants), que visa a alcanzar la mejoría en la profesión y perfeccionamiento de los profesionales en el área contable. La pesquisa fue realizada con alumnos de enseñanza media, en el año de 2013. La población composta por 12 escuelas públicas, localizadas en la ciudad de Uberlândia-MG, obteniéndose un total de 841 encuestados. Los resultados evidenciaron que la percepción de los alumnos de la enseñanza media converge para muchas habilidades descritas por IFAC, con mayor concordancia para las habilidades técnicas y funcionales. Los hallados de este estudio indican que los alumnos no conozcan la amplitud del área de actuación de los profesionales de la contabilidad, lo que podrá afectar la elección profesional de los mismos. Se concluye que existe un estereotipo con relación al profesional contable, teniendo en vista que los alumnos entienden que el contador actúa principalmente con contenidos del área de exactas, lo que puede intimidar a aquellos que no les gusten tal área. Así, el estudio contribuye por promover la reflexión y diseminación sobre las habilidades y conocimientos preconizados por los órganos enganchados a la educación contable, envolviendo la percepción de alumnos de enseñanza media, futuros profesionales, cuanto a la actuación del profesional contable.A escolha da profissão é, sem dúvida, uma das decisões mais importantes na vida de uma pessoa. Possuir informações adequadas, livres de estereótipos e vieses é igualmente importante, tanto para o futuro profissional, quanto para a sociedade em geral que irá usufruir dos serviços por ele prestados. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as habilidades e conhecimentos que os alunos de ensino médio julgam necessários para a atuação do contador, bem como comparar se tais habilidades e conhecimentos são convergentes para aqueles preconizados pela IFAC (International Federation of Accountants), que visa a alcançar a melhoria na profissão e aperfeiçoamento dos profissionais na área contábil. Conclui-se que existe um estereótipo em relação ao profissional contábil, tendo em vista que os alunos entendem que o contador atua principalmente com conteúdos da área de exatas, o que pode intimidar aqueles que não gostam de tal área.
