Resumo: The article focuses on studying the situation of small rural municipalities in the Piratini River Basin and São Gonçalo Canal, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in relation to access to potable water. In these locations, achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 becomes an even more distant reality. In this sense, the central question to be answered is: What is the importance of using specific indicators that measure access to potable water in small rural municipalities? There was a need for greater clarity and availability of information about this access, in order to think about the construction of local public policies.
