Resumo: This review presents Lilia Moritz Schwarcz's book, “About Brazilian authoritarianism”, edited by Companhia das Letras, in 2019. The author examines some of the foundations of authoritarianism in Brazil, from a critical perspective that reveals some national myths. The historical, sociological, and anthropological approach about eight themes pointed out by the author as central to understanding authoritarianism in the country engendered by the naturalization of social inequality, the persistence in denying racism and some prejudices, and the improvement of patrimonial practices and bossiness. The researcher offers us important reflections from a consistent theoretical basis and statistical data. The work is an important contribution to all people who wish to understand the social, political, and historical dynamics of authoritarianism in Brazil in order to act in the defense and promotion of Human Rights. In this direction, the book presents important elements to those who work in Human Rights Education anchored in anti-racist and emancipatory pedagogy. The author promoted an instigating reflection on what she called the ghosts of the present time, which, analyzing the political context of the period in which her research was produced, made it clear that the various forms of violence present in our daily lives were inherited from our past.

La autora examina algunas de las raíces del autoritarismo en el Brasil, bajo una perspectiva crítica que desvela los diversos mitos nacionales. El abordaje histórico, sociológico y antropológico acerca de ochos temas centrales apuntados por la autora para comprender el autoritarismo en el país engendrado por la naturalización de la desigualdad social, por la persistencia en negar el racismo y prejuicios diversos y por el perfeccionamiento de prácticas patrimonialistas y del mandonismo. La investigadora nos ofrece importantes reflexiones a partir de una consistente base teórica y de datos estadísticos. La obra es una importante contribución para todas las personas que pretendan comprender la dinámica social, política e histórica del autoritarismo en el país para actuar en la defensa y promoción de los Derechos Humanos. En ese sentido, el libro presenta elementos importantes a los que actúan en la Educación en Derechos Humanos anclada en la pedagogía antirracista y emancipadora. La autora promovió una incitante reflexión sobre lo que ella denominó como fantasmas del tiempo presente que, analizando el contexto político del período da producción de su investigación, dejo claro que las variadas formas de violencia presentes en nuestro cotidiano fueron heredadas de nuestro pasado.Esta resenha apresenta o livro de Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, “Sobre o autoritarismo brasileiro”, editado pela Companhia das Letras, no ano de 2019.
