Resumo: This article is an analysis on bibliographic collecting and strategies for its social recognition, and it has colletctor Henry Joseph Lynch (1878-1958) as its analytical object. The present research is qualitative in nature, with a documental-theoretical approach, and it uses as its main sources of analysis and interpretation the collector’s cultural assets, his ex libris, contemporary newspapers, and catalogs and documents related to the collection. The consulted bibliography ranges from themes that address collecting, with specialized references to cultural material, to bibliophilia, cultural goods (the collection), and ex libris. The gathering of objetcs due to a desire for ownership, the collecting history, the strategies of social legitimation and, finally, the dispersion of Lynch’s book collection, are all part of the social life of this collection. A pesquisa é de natureza qualitativa, de cunho teórico-documental, tendo como principais fontes de analise e interpretação os bens culturais, o ex libris do colecionador, jornais da época, catálogos e documentos sobre a coleção. A bibliografia consultada se distribui em temas que abordam o colecionismo, com referencias especializados em cultura material, bibliofilia, bens culturais (coleção) e ex libris.
