Resumo: Due to the blood flow interruption, liver ischemia is used in surgical procedures of hepatic resection, transplantation, and secondary hemorrhage from trauma. The objective of this study was to protect the liver parenchyma during ischemia and reperfusion under the effect of Ilex paragiariensis. Eighteen three-month-old Wistar mice were divided into three groups: control group with administration of serum glucose 5%, group N-acetylcysteine 10%, and group Ilex paraguariensis 900 mg/mL. Every group had the liver triad clamped and thirty minutes of ischemia followed by 15 minutes of reperfusion. The animals were taken to euthanasia under anesthesia by blood removal. Their livers were examined by optical microscopy, and they were found as expanded and with the center-lobular vein and sinusoids congested. In conclusion, Ilex paraguariensis was verified as capable of maintaining the morphological structure of the liver parenchyma compared to the effect of N-acetylcysteine in the injury of liver ischemia and reperfusion in mice.
