Resumo: Complementary feeding is defined as the process starting when breast milk alone is no longer sufficient to meet infant nutritional requirements and therefore other liquids and feed are needed along with it. The aim of this study was to identify the main characteristics of early complementary feeding in children under 6 months of age. This study compared the data from two cross-sectional population based studies carried out in the municipality of Rio Grande, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1995 and 2004. There was a significant reduction in the proportion of children drinking water and tea in the first month of life. Besides, there was an increase in the proportion of children that started receiving juices, artificial milk, cow milk, vegetables, meat, fruits and beans after the sixth month of life. Thus, there is still high prevalence of precocious feed introduction to children’s diet in that municipality.

El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las principales características de la alimentación complementaria temprana en niños menores de 6 meses. Se compararon los datos obtenidos en dos estudios transversales de base poblacional realizados en Río Grande, RS, Brasil, en 1995 y 2004. Hubo reducción significativa en la proporción de niños que bebieron agua y tés en el primer mes de vida. Hubo, además, un aumento en la proporción de niños que recibieron jugos, leche artificial, leche de la vaca,verduras, carne,frutas y frijoles después del sexto mes de vida.Todavía se introducen alimentos de manera precoz en la dieta de los niños de esa ciudad.Alimentação complementar é o processo iniciado quando o leite materno não é suficiente para atingir as necessidades dos bebês, precisando-se introduzir outros alimentos e líquidos à dieta. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as principais características da introdução de alimentos precocemente, em crianças com menos de 6 meses de vida. Este estudo foi feito através da comparação dos dados obtidos em dois estudos transversais de base populacional realizados na cidade do Rio Grande/RS, Brasil, em 1995 e 2004. Ocorreram reduções significativas na proporção de crianças que ingeriram água e chás no primeiro mês de vida. Além disso, houve um aumento na proporção de crianças que começaram a receber sucos, leite artificial, leite de vaca, vegetais, carnes, frutas e feijão após o sexto mês de vida.
