Resumo: | Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by atypical development, behavioral manifestations, impairment in communication and social interaction, and repetitive behavior patterns. This study consists of a narrative literature review and was developed based on a documentary analysis of the bibliographic production obtained through the Pubmed and Scielo databases. The criteria for inclusion of studies were: articles published between 2012 and 2023; written in Portuguese and English. Articles published in English were translated for subsequent evaluation. Fear and trauma will always be an obstacle to dental intervention in the treatment of children and adults, with or without special needs, which makes it even more difficult for dentists to put their skills into practice. Conditioning techniques or even a multidisciplinary approach in children with ASD, the standard to be followed is always welcoming, family involvement, behavioral and psychological conditioning. In this way, it was possible to understand that dental treatment for patients with ASD is fundamental and possible as long as the professional is properly trained, having an appropriate and differentiated approach for each person. |
