Resumo: | The proper use of water resources and the correct management of irrigation in maize crops require practical and simple tools, however, based on scientific studies. Thus, the objective of this work was to elaborate soil water balances, adapting the model of Thornthwaite and Mather (1955) for the cultivation of maize under rainfed and irrigated conditions, in different growing seasons (summer-autumn, autumn-winter, winter-spring and spring-summer) in the semiarid region of the state of Alagoas, Brazil. The research was carried out with meteorological data obtained from an automatic station installed in the city of Piranhas. Crop evapotranspiration was determined by the single crop coefficient method, reference evapotranspiration by the Penman-Monteith model and the soil water balance by the Thornthwaite and Mather model. In the semiarid region of Alagoas, the water demand of the corn crop is 551, 457, 650 and 633 mm for crops in January-May, April-August, July-November and October-February, respectively, in which only rainfall is not enough to supply this demand, being necessary to make use of irrigation. |
