Resumo: The soil mesofauna has been the subject of research to aim recovery and management soils since the main function of soil biota is  participation  in  the  processes  of  transformation  and  flux of nutrients. A human activity inappropriate has beget of large area and become unproductive in terms of agriculture. Therefore is consider essential to identification and quantification of soil fauna in the understanding of biological interaction of soil/plant and knowledge of the level of degradation on search for mitigating this process. In Brasil, mainly in semi-arid region are limited research on soil fauna. The present work have objective to show through the literature on organic matter/soil/ fauna the importance of the soil mesofauna as indicative of degraded areas.

A atividade antrópica inadequada tem gerado a degradação de imensas áreas, tornando-se improdutivas do ponto de vista agrícola. Nesse sentido, consideramos indispensável a identificação e quantificação da fauna edáfica na compreensão das interações biológicas do sistema solo/planta e no conhecimento do nível de degradação, bem como na busca da mitigação desse processo. No Brasil, principalmente no semi-árido são limitadas as pesquisas voltadas para a fauna do solo.
