Resumo: Pain is a complex experience, influenced by cognitive and emotional factors, and can vary between individuals and over time. Painful conditions can result in a variety of clinical outcomes, including the transition to chronic pain, which is affected by genetic factors, previous experiences, and traumatic events. Understanding chronic pain requires a biopsychosocial approach, considering its interaction with biological, psychological, and social factors. There are three main types of pain: inflammatory, neuropathic, and nociceptive, each with distinct characteristics and specific origins. The study aims to deepen the understanding of the emotional impact on the perception of chronic pain, especially in relation to the analgesia threshold. It will investigate how specific emotional states, such as pain catastrophizing, and problems in emotional processing influence patients' response to analgesic treatments. Chronic pain that persists for more than three months negatively affects quality of life, causing sleep disturbances, depressive symptoms, and limiting daily activities. Physical, psychological, and social factors, such as central sensitization and emotional influences, contribute to its complexity. Women, the elderly, and people of low socioeconomic status are more likely to suffer from chronic pain. Emotions and cognitive functions play crucial roles in chronic pain, with catastrophizing and changes in emotional processing contributing to its intensity. Chronic pain is a complex condition that requires integrated approaches to treatment, considering its physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects. Personalized therapeutic strategies are needed to cope with their emotional burden and neurobiological complexity, aiming for a more complete understanding and more effective and compassionate interventions. Key words: Chronic pain; Emotional impact; Pain perception.
