Book's materiality: mapping and thematic visualization in information science literature through Voyant Tools

Introduction: The book is a symbolic object or a “semiophore”, which denotes its condition of being “beyond information”, involving, in addition, materiality and institutionality. In the light of such characteristics, the objective is to survey and visualize authors, works and themes related or tangent to the subject “book’s materiality” in the scope of information science. Method: A mapping was carried out in national and international databases, with which it was possible to point out theoretical paths and indicators for investigations from the thematic coverage, visualized through Voyant Tools. Results: 100 documents corresponding to the period between 1996 and 2020 were analyzed, with the highest occurrence of publication in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In terms of terminology, expressions that lead to the understanding of the book as a documentary and symbolic support that contains information, stand out, and can form part of collections in institutions such as libraries, where it represents social memory. The journals that most publish on the subject are Encontros Bibli and Journal of Documentation, and the databases that index the most on the subject are BRAPCI and Library and Information Science Abstracts. Conclusion: The book establishes relationships with the subjects in its analog and digital form, and its materiality configures reading and cultural practices. The theme “materiality” contributes by expanding theoretical horizons in the area of information science, specifically related to the book as a document.
