Resumo: Respiratory diseases represent one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The pathological involvement of the airways increases the risks of psychiatric disorders, due to the numerous hospital admissions and the dependence on medical and personal care. This article aimed to identify the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with respiratory diseases in a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia, as well as to evaluate the factors possibly associated with anxious and depressive symptoms in these patients. To that end, an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, which took place at the Hospital Especializado Octávio Mangabeira (HEOM), was conducted. A convenience sample of 140 patients assisted from October 2018 to January 2019 was used. Participants answered the following instruments: clinical, demographic and socioeconomic questionnaire; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). For data analysis, Fisher’s exact test was chosen reaching a prevalence of probable anxious and depressive symptoms of 35.7% and 31.4%, respectively. The significant variables (p < 0.05) found in the study were: sex, marital status, family income, and asthma. The findings of this research point to the importance of assessing the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression to improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients, in addition to the adherence to the treatment of the respiratory pathology.
