Nursing contributions in the care of children with autism spectrum disorder: a literature review

Since nurses make the first contact with the child patient in health care services, they can inquire about the child’s history and behavioral aspects during anamnesis. This study sought to describe the main contributions of nursing to the care of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An integrative literature review, with a descriptive and exploratory approach, was conducted from March 4 to April 16, 2022. Bibliographic search was performed on the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) databases via the Virtual Health Library (BVS), PUBMED and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). As a search strategy to restrict and expand the results regarding nursing contributions to children with ASD, the Boolean operators AND and OR were combined according to the databases. A total of 1124 articles were identified, but only eight papers were included in the final study sample. Nurses play an important role in the care of children with ASD, because at the time of the appointment, this professional makes the first contact with the patient, being able, through this mechanism, to screen and identify signs and symptoms of the disorder. It is essential that the care provided by the nursing team be embracing, holistic and ethical to convey safety to the child with ASD.
