ATTITUDES OF ADOLESCENTS FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS ABOUT THE USE OF CONDOM: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY

Adolescence is a period of great transformation marked by risky sexual behavior, mainly as a result of unprotected sex. In this sense, the objective of our study was to evaluate the attitudes of adolescents of public schools about the use of condom in all sexual relations. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach conducted with 195 adolescents from public schools in the city of Caxias, state of Maranhão. The statistical analysis was performed using Stata® version 14.0, considering a statistical significance of P ? 0.05. According to the results, of the 195 adolescents that participated in the study, 55.4% were female and 54.9% aged ? 16 years; 91.3% of the adolescents showed a positive attitude regarding the use of condoms in all sexual relations; 53.8% had already started sexual relations, of which, 54.3% reported condom use in all sexual relations. In the multinomial logistic regression model, the conception that the condom decreases pleasure in sexual intercourse (P = 0.001) and the intention to have sex even if the partner did not want to use condom (P = 0.045) were associated with negative attitudes about consistent condom use. Despite the good knowledge and positive attitudes shown by adolescents about the use of condom, they still express sexual behaviors that make them vulnerable to unsafe sex, showing that there is still a strong external influence on their opinions and decisions regarding their sexual attitudes and practices.
