The process of regionalization of health is highlighted at the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS - National Health System), as an important strategy to deal with the regional inequalities due to the building of the Brazilian Health Politics. On a national level, the state of Bahia is considered a pioneer in the decentralization of state administration and in having the State Department as a protagonist in the planning of networks and regional health care. This article presents discussions with respect to the analysis of the process of regionalization of health in Bahia, from the perspective of the state administration. Interviews were conducted with state managers, the script was built based on the Matrix of Evaluation of Regionalization of Health (MARS), organized from the following levels of analysis: government, management and assistance. Founded on a qualitative approach, the study has highlighted advancements that ought to be achieved, thematic categories were established, based on the analytical method of Content Analysis. The results and discussions point to the scenario found in the researched period, to the ambiguity of regionalization in the state, to the important strategies for health regions and to the necessary advances to operationalize the regionalization. The discussions address the participation of health councils, primary health care and the formation of health networks, tools and spaces for management and resources. Therefore, the issues addressed here aim to contribute with the process of regionalization of health, collaborating with the analysis of the current scenario in public health.
