Height of the players who competed in the World Cup according field position

Resumo: The aim of the present study were describe the stature pattern of World Cup elite football players and compare the means of stature in accordance to the position in the field. Method: The stature and the position of the football players were obtained from the official list of players available in the FIFA's site. The sample of the present study was composed by 96 (13.04%) goalkeepers, 230 (31.25%) defenders, 249 (33.83%), midfielders and 161 (21.88%) strikers. After the normality of the data the means were compared by the ANOVA one way. The level of significance were p<0.05. Results: The results are expressed as means and standard deviation. The mean high of the 736 football players was 182.42 ± 6.02cm. The goalkeepers have higher mean of stature in comparison to all positions (187.67 ± 5.19cm; p<0.05). The body height of defenders was 183.05 ± 6.16cm and was higher than midfielders and strikers (p<0.05). Midfielders and forwards have mean body high of 178.73 ± 6.27cm and 180.22 ± 6.47cm, respectively, with no significant differences between them (p>0.05). Conclusion: The mean of body height in football players called to play the World Cup vary in accordance to the player position and seem to be related with the specific functions performed in the field. Biological, technical, tactical and behaviors seemed the most important factors that may explain and justify the differences founded in the present study and need to be more investigated.

Materiales y Métodos: La estatura y posición de los jugadores convocados para la Copa del Mundo se obtuvieron de la lista oficial de jugadores de la FIFA. Del total de jugadores convocados, 96 (13,04%) eran porteros, 230 (31,25%) defensas, 249 (33,83%) centrocampistas y 161 (21,88%) delanteros. Para comparar las estaturas promedio de porteros, defensores, mediocampistas y atacantes, se utilizó ANOVA de una vía. El nivel de significación fue p<0,05. Resultados: los resultados se presentan como media y desviación estándar. La altura media de los 736 jugadores fue de 182,42 ± 6,02 cm. Los porteros tenían una altura media de 187,67 ± 5,19 cm, significativamente mayor (p<0,05) que las demás posiciones. Los defensas tenían una estatura promedio de 183,05 ± 6,16 cm, significativamente mayor (p<0,05) que los centrocampistas y atacantes. Centrocampistas y delanteros tuvieron una altura media de 178,73 ± 6,27 cm y 180,22 ± 6,47 cm, respectivamente, sin diferencias significativas (p>0,05). Conclusión: la estatura promedio de los jugadores que compitieron en la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2014 varió según la posición en el campo y parece estar relacionada con las funciones específicas de cada posición. Los aspectos biológicos, técnicos, tácticos y también conductuales aparecen como las principales justificaciones de las diferencias encontradas y necesitan ser investigadas más a fondo.Obiettivi: il presente studio ha lo scopo di descrivere l'andamento dell'altezza dei giocatori che hanno giocato la Coppa del Mondo FIFA® 2014 e di verificare se ci sono differenze significative nell'altezza di questi giocatori in base alla posizione occupata sul campo. Materiali e Metodi: La statura e la posizione dei giocatori convocati per la Coppa del Mondo sono state ricavate dalla rosa ufficiale della FIFA. Di tutti i giocatori convocati, 96 (13,04%) erano portieri, 230 (31,25%) difensori, 249 (33,83%), centrocampisti e 161 (21,88%) attaccanti. Per confrontare le altezze medie di portieri, difensori, centrocampisti e attaccanti, è stata utilizzata l'ANOVA unidirezionale. Il livello di significatività era p<0,05. Risultati: i risultati sono presentati come media e deviazione standard. L'altezza media dei 736 giocatori era di 182,42 ± 6,02 cm. I portieri avevano un'altezza media di 187,67 ± 5,19 cm, che era significativamente più alta (p<0,05) rispetto alle altre posizioni. I difensori avevano un'altezza media di 183,05 ± 6,16 cm, che era significativamente più alta (p<0,05) rispetto a centrocampisti e attaccanti. Centrocampisti e attaccanti avevano un'altezza media rispettivamente di 178,73 ± 6,27 cm e 180,22 ± 6,47 cm, senza differenze significative (p>0,05). Conclusione: l'altezza media dei giocatori che hanno partecipato alla Coppa del Mondo FIFA 2014 variava a seconda della posizione in campo e sembra essere correlata alle funzioni specifiche di ciascuna posizione.
