Resumo: The research aimed to characterize the distribution of land in the state of Rio de Janeiro and verify its relation with the availability of land among the family establishments. In this analysis, which was based on data from the Agricultural Census (2006), The Gini index, the average area, the percentage of the area corresponding to the 5% largest landholders, and the percentage of the area corresponding to the 50% smallest landholders, were used to describe the profile of the land distribution. It was found that, in general, the state family establishments have a reduced area. Most of them, almost 87%, can be characterized as minifundia. It was also observed that the greater proportion of minifundios tends to be found in municipalities with a more concentrated land structure.
