Feasibility studies on the utilization of dual purpose plants in Brazil

Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to orientate the selection of those areas of the Brazilian territory wich, while having a sizable population and ressonable economic conditions, suffer from a shortage of fresh water as well as from deficiency in power supply. In the first part of the paper the authors estabilish the general criterion for locationg the sites where the utilization of Dual Purpose Nuclear Power Plants will entirely solve the problems of water ans power shortage with no appreciable increase in the combined cost of water and power comsumption in residential houses, shops, schools, hospitals and other non-industrial buildings. It also gives a brief description of the method for determining the cost of the water produced for those regions. In the second part is given a general picture of the power situation in Brazil with emphasis on regions where the fresh water supply is defficient and power supply is precarious. In those regions there equally valid reasons for and against the use of nuclear fuel for those plants. In conclusion, the paper presents a brief study of a Dual Purpose Nuclear recommended for FORTALEZA, state of CEARÁ where situation appears to be the most critical.
