Resumo: The study results from bibliographical and empirical research with 40 students from the pre-university courses at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF - Campos) and Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF), both located in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ. It aims to elucidate the presence of religion and family as conditioning factors in the process of choosing young people's professional careers. It maintains that family offers material conditions and social supports, and religion provides values that guide the choice of profession, despite some young people that declare themselves without religion. This way, the article argues that family and religion are socializing institutions, present materially and symbolically in the process of choosing a professional career.

Objetiva elucidar a presença da religião e da família como condicionantes no processo de escolha da carreira profissional dos jovens. Sustenta que a família oferece condições materiais e suportes sociais, e a religião fornece valores que orientam a escolha da profissão, a despeito de alguns jovens se declararem sem religião.
