Resumo: Reading about daily life through a novel´s narrative, which from the author’s point of view of the real world is articulated as fiction and recreated in the author-reader relationship acquires meanings in this study about Mangue, a regional novel by Osorio Peixoto. Involving themes such as historical memory, culture and literature, this article prioritizes an analysis that emphasizes the character and lifestyle of islanders on Pessanha`s island, a scenery in which the characters circulate and weave life stories, marked by poverty, oppression, disregard of the authorities, inhumanities and lack of citizenship. Based on the review of the literature, the study presents a critical and reflexive analysis of the saga of riverside communities described in the book, a text, which links poetry and fiction.

O presente artigo, ao enredar temáticas como memórias, cultura e literatura, priorizou análise que enfatizou o modo de ser e viver dos ilhéus da ilha do Pessanha, cenário aonde as personagens circulam e tecem histórias de vida, marcadas pela pobreza, opressão, descaso das autoridades, desumanidades e ausência de cidadania.
