Resumo: The locus of the research is the Antonio Sarlo State Agricultural and Technical School, in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. The school has undergone a process of disrepute due to reduced enrollment in the Agriculture Course. We aimed at understanding the reasons for this decline. Thus, we carried out a qualitative research coupled with the construction of the history of the institution, as well as an analysis of important aspects of the agricultural sector to understand the influences of the economy for the course. The research included interviews with people in the school community. Results indicate two different reasons: one related to local economic changes that influence the reduction of students, and the other related to the state educational policies that do not attend particularities of the vocational education provided by the school.

A escola, localizada na sede do município de Campos dos Goytacazes, tem passado por um processo de desprestígio devido à redução de matrículas para o curso técnico em agropecuária. A partir disso, este trabalho buscou compreender os motivos desse declínio. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa aliada à construção de um histórico da instituição. Além disso, empreendeu-se uma análise dos aspectos característicos do setor agropecuário do município onde a escola se localiza, a fim de entender as influências do mesmo para o curso. Nessa perspectiva, a pesquisa utilizou duas fontes: a primeira, formada pelas referências bibliográficas que tratavam das características da economia do município de Campos dos Goytacazes; a segunda, produzida através da realização de entrevistas individuais com pessoas que fazem parte da dinâmica da escola, entre elas, o diretor, professores e alunos. Contudo, os resultados do estudo apontaram para dois motivos: um externo, relacionado às transformações econômicas do município e outro relacionado às políticas educacionais estaduais destinadas à educação profissional agrícola, que não contemplam as especificidades da formação.
