Self-injurious behavior and suicidal ideation in Adolescence: challenges in Vocational Education and Training

Resumo: This article aims to communicate the results of the research entitled “Pedagogy of presence applied to the prevention of suicidal ideation and self-harm in adolescence”, developed at the Federal Institute of Rondônia. The objectives of the study were to contribute to the pedagogical management of the problem of suicidal ideation and self-harming behavior in adolescents, through theoretical reflection and transfer of two educational products. The research was developed in a qualitative approach, based on the Educational Action Research methodology. The results indicate that the school is both a factor of stress and illness and it has the potential to contribute to the promotion of students' mental health, self-care and care for others. It is argued that an omnilateral training, supported by the Pedagogy of Presence is capable of favoring the understanding of the structural and conjunctural factors of our time - which favors the reduction of personal frustrations, the flexibilization of the notions of failure and success among adolescents, and the development of cognitive and socio-emotional skills, in addition to what has been stimulated by neoliberal education reforms.

Los objetivos fueron contribuir al manejo pedagógico del problema de la ideación suicida y la conducta autolesiva en adolescentes, a través de la reflexión teórica y transferencia de dos productos educativos. La investigación se desarrolló en un enfoque cualitativo, basado en la metodología de la Investigación Acción Educativa. Los resultados indican que la Escuela es tanto factor de estrés como de enfermedad y tiene el potencial de contribuir para la promoción de la salud mental de los estudiantes, el autocuidado y el cuidado de los demás. Se argumenta que una formación omnilateral, apoyada en la Pedagogía de la Presencia, es capaz de favorecer la comprensión de los factores estructurales y coyunturales de nuestro tiempo - lo que favorece la reducción de las frustraciones personales, la flexibilización de las nociones de fracaso y éxito entre los adolescentes, y el desarrollo de habilidades cognitivas y socioemocionales, además de lo que ha sido estimulado por las reformas educativas neoliberalesEste artigo visa comunicar os resultados da pesquisa intitulada “Pedagogia da presença aplicada à prevenção de ideações suicidas e autoagressão na adolescência”, desenvolvida no Instituto Federal de Rondônia. Os objetivos do estudo consistiram em contribuir para o manejo pedagógico do problema da ideação suicida e conduta autolesiva em adolescentes, mediante reflexão teórica e transferência de dois produtos educacionais. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em abordagem qualitativa, com base na metodologia da Pesquisa-ação educacional. Os resultados indicam que a Escola tanto é fator de estresse e adoecimento como tem o potencial de contribuir para a promoção da saúde mental dos estudantes, do cuidado de si e do cuidado do outro.
