Resumo: The “viola caipira” (Brazilian ten-strings guitar) has been present in Brazil since the beginning of colonization, brought by the Portuguese and widely disseminated in the most varied cultural manifestations of the Brazilian population. On June 14, 2018, a patrimonialization process was concluded, which focused on making and playing the viola, thus recognizing the Knowledge, Languages and Musical Expressions of the Viola in Minas Gerais as intangible cultural heritage of this state. In this proposal, we present the first analyses, referring to ongoing research in the Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage, Landscapes and Citizenship at the Federal University of Viçosa, with the objective of reflecting on the concepts and strategies that make up the heritage preservation policy in Brazil. Based on the analysis of the data contained in the viola's registration dossier and the reading of part of the bibliographic reference, we will seek to understand and describe this heritage process. The fact that the sonority of the viola is also related to the memory and cultural identity of different groups of people, makes it imperative to have a discussion directed to the soundscape and its relevance in the conception of a heritage, as well as a deepening in the understanding of intangible heritage will help us to assimilate the paths taken during this patrimonialization process, in the choice of expressions that had a perceived “heritage value” and the criteria used to determine the non-inclusion of other musical practices in which the viola caipira is present.
