Resumo: This article aims to understand some of the motivations for school abandonment and dropout in the freshman year of high school in three public schools of a municipality of the state of Paraná, Brazil, based on pedagogical directors’ understandings. The research is part of a graduation program in education, a master’s degree. As a qualitative study, it conducted a literature review and document analysis. It also collected data via online forms. Amongst the authors studied one finds Patto (2015), Freitas (2018), and others. The paper highlights that, before the school abandonment and failure, there still is an understanding held by these school workers that tends to blame young people and social external factors, alleviating school’s responsibilities and often bypassing the State’s responsibility related to education access and permanence policies in school.

Se trata de una investigación realizada a nivel de maestría en el PPG en Educación. Con un enfoque cualitativo, se desarrolló a partir de una revisión bibliográfica, análisis de documentos y datos recolectados vía formulario online, teniendo como soporte teórico a autores como Patto (2015); Freitas (2018), entre otros. En consecuencia, destaca que ante al abandono y el fracaso escolar, estos profesionales aún tienen un entendimiento que tiende a culpar a los jóvenes o factores sociales externos, amenizando las responsabilidades de la escuela y, en ocasiones, ignorando la responsabilidad del Estado en relación con políticas de acceso y permanencia en la escuela.Este artigo tem por objetivo compreender o que motiva o abandono e a evasão na 1.a série do ensino médio em três escolas da rede estadual no município de Pato Branco, situado no Sudoeste do Paraná, a partir da compreensão de pedagogas destas escolas. A pesquisa foi realizada no PPG em Educação, nível de mestrado. Com abordagem qualitativa, foi desenvolvida a partir de revisão bibliográfica, análise documental e dados levantados via formulário on-line, tendo como suporte teórico autores como Patto (2015), Freitas (2018) e outros.
