PBL METHODOLOGY: A TEACHING PRACTICE IN THE CIVIL ENGINEERING COURSE

Resumo: | In this paper we analyze the teaching practice in constructing a bridge prototype with recycled paper, worked through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) methodology in a Civil Engineering course. In the literature review, theoretical references were sought according to the principles of Barrows, one of the developers of PBL as it is known today. Data collection used observations of the teaching practice, interviews with the professor, and a questionnaire for the discipline's students. We sought to identify the contributions of PBL to the development of the professional profile of future engineers and aspects identified as positive or negative by students and professors. Students resolved real situations inherent to their future careers but pointed out increased workload and teachers' lack of ability to use the methodology, including criteria of evaluation. The experience was considered successful for the development of skills necessary for future Civil Engineering professional practice. |

En la revisión de la literatura se buscaron referencias teóricas según los principios de Barrows, uno de los desarrolladores del ABP tal como lo conocemos hoy. La recolección de datos utilizó observaciones de campo, entrevistas con el profesor y un cuestionario para los estudiantes de la disciplina. Buscamos identificar las contribuciones del ABP al desarrollo del perfil profesional de los futuros ingenieros y los aspectos identificados como positivos o negativos por estudiantes y profesores. Los estudiantes resolvieron situaciones reales inherentes a sus futuras carreras, pero señalaron el aumento de la carga de trabajo y la falta de habilidad de los profesores para usar la metodología, incluyendo criterios de evaluación. Sin embargo, la experiencia fue exitosa en el desarrollo de las habilidades necesarias para el futuro profesional de la Ingeniería Civil.Neste artigo se analisa a prática docente na construção de um protótipo de ponte com papel reciclado, trabalhada via metodologia Problem Based Learning (PBL) em um curso de Engenharia Civil. Na revisão bibliográfica, buscaram-se referenciais teóricos segundo os princípios de Barrows, um dos desenvolvedores da metodologia PBL como a conhecemos hoje. A coleta de dados utilizou observações da prática docente, entrevista com o docente e questionário para os discentes da disciplina. Buscou-se identificar as contribuições da PBL para o desenvolvimento do perfil profissional dos futuros engenheiros e aspectos apontados como positivos ou negativos pelos estudantes e pelo docente. Os estudantes resolveram situações reais inerentes às suas futuras carreiras, mas apontaram o aumento de carga horária e pouca habilidade dos professores em utilizar a metodologia, incluindo critérios de avaliação.
