Resumo: The aim of this paper was to analyze the contribution of the implementation of a proposal of teaching via problem solving to promote the understanding of the equation of the first degree with an unknown. We conducted a participant survey involving 34 seventh graders of public elementary school. We collect your resolution strategies, as well as participation and motivation throughout the classes. The results showed that the trial and error strategy was the most used by the groups, which managed to solve the two proposed problems, except one group that had difficulties in the representation stage when trying to solve the problem 2. The results also showed that the class is not very participative and there was the disinterest of some students. We conclude that the help of the researcher-teacher was fundamental for the students to solve the problems and, thus, understand the 1st degree equation with an unknown.
