Resumo: Bahia has one of the largest populations of blacks in the country, however it has a low number of blacks in command positions in the military police. The purpose of this study is to answer the question: What are the reasons for the low number of black people in the PMBA's senior ranks? The research was developed from a bibliographical and documentary review of books, dissertations, theses and scientific articles. We analyze racism and its implications in Brazil and in institutions, including the military police of different states. Preliminary results point to the presence of institutional racism as a present and relevant factor in the organization, including influencing the way in which promotions occur in the PMBA officialdom.

El propósito de este estudio es responder a la pregunta: ¿Cuáles son las razones del bajo número de personas negras en los altos cargos del PMBA? La investigación se desarrolló a partir de una revisión bibliográfica y documental de libros, disertaciones, tesis y artículos científicos. Analizamos el racismo y sus implicaciones en Brasil y en las instituciones, incluidas las policías militares de diferentes estados. Los resultados preliminares apuntan a la presencia del racismo institucional como un factor presente y relevante en la organización, incluso influyendo en la forma en que se producen los ascensos en la burocracia del PMBA.A Bahia tem uma das maiores populações de negros do país, entretanto chama atenção a baixa quantidade de negros em cargos de comando na polícia militar do estado. A finalidade deste estudo é responder à seguinte questão: Quais as razões da baixa quantidade de negros no oficialato superior da PMBA? A pesquisa foi desenvolvida a partir de revisão bibliográfica e documental em livros, dissertações, teses e artigos científicos. Analisamos o racismo e suas implicações no Brasil e nas instituições, inclusive nas polícias militares de diferentes estados.
