Historical series of leprosy cases in under15 years in a state in northeastern brazil

Objective: To analyze the historical series of leprosy or Hansen’s disease cases in children under 15 years of age in Alagoas, from 1995 to 2013. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, with secondary data from the Information System on Diseases of Compulsory Declaration (SINAN), which were processed in the BioEstat Program and applied the Chi-Square statistical test. Results: 534 cases of leprosy were reported in children younger than 15 years of age, most of them female (53.74%). The data show that in the year of 1995, the coefficient of detection of leprosy in this age was 2,31 per 100.000/inhab, when comparing with 2003 a coefficient of 4,1 per 100,000/inhab was found. After this period, oscillations can occur in the cases detection, and in 2008 there was a significant drop to 2,0 per 100.000/inhab. When relating the percentage of clinical forms, the tuberculoid one stood out with 35%. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with leprosy are a significant group in the epidemiological chain, since household contacts play an important role in the disease development.
