Failures on epidemiological surveillance of Hansen’s disease: four multibacillary cases in child, at Piauí state, Brazil

Resumo: Four clinical cases of Hansen´s Disease (HD) in child are presented, illustrating the complexity of the epidemiological surveillance of the illness and technical guidelines implementation. The cases are similar in age and epidemiological pattern in common having their father as multibacillary case. Also, all of them have been gone to the health unit, when of the diagnosis of the respective parents. At that time BCG was applied, but in at least one case clinical examination was not carried through. The authors conclude that the bad performance of the activities foreseen for the Prophylaxis of Hansen´s Disease as well as its long incubation period, compromises the impact of the same ones in the reduction of new sources of infection, beyond contributing for the long-lasting of the reduction of the endemic disease in the country.

Os casos são semelhantes em idade e situação epidemiológica, tendo em comum ser o pai portador de hanseníase multibacilar. Também em comum tem o fato de terem sido levadas a unidade de saúde, quando do diagnóstico dos respectivos pais. Na ocasião foi aplicado BCG, mas em pelo menos um caso não foi realizado exame clínico.
