State of the art in leprosy: an integrative review in three Brazilian journals of international impact

Aim: To identify the state of the art in leprosy on three Brazilian journals that have international circulation. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted on the basis of the following periodics: Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health Notebooks, using as descriptors: hanseaníase / leprosy. Results: Thesample consisted of 43 articles, which were divided into themes: pathological process; epidemiology and control strategies; transmission, diagnosis, disability, treatment and responses. The pathological process theme had higher concentration of studies (14 articles) followed by the others. Conclusion: The studies indicate a need for leprosy control as well as they evidence auxiliary tools to an early diagnostic and subclinical infections identification. There is also a need for integration of health care network services to monitor patients in the post-discharge period. In the studied literature, there are still controversies about complementary responses on the use of uniform therapeutic regimens, reduction of the drug regimen and elimination of diagnostic errors for the disease clinical classification.
