Resumo: Introduction: The database of the Hospital-based Cancer Registry allow the design of activities related to surveillance and planning of health care. Objective: To analyze the Hospital Cancer Registry database from the Antonio Pedro University Hospital at the Fluminense Federal University, over the 2000-2009 period, by gender, age group, tumor primary site and hospital mortality. Method: By exporting the database and design of bivariate analysis tables, with estimative of hypothesis tests and measures of association. Results: 3,544 patients were registered, 55.3% of which were female. Out of the total cases, in male, there was a higher concentration of patients from 60 to 79 year old (51.0%); while in the female cases, the concentration occurred in the group from the 40 to 59 years of age (45.8%). In male patients, the tumors of the digestive system occurred in higher number (29.2%), followed by genitals (19.9%) and the respiratory system (19.3%). In female patients, breast tumors were the most registered (37.8%), followed by the digestive system (17.4%) and genitals (13.4%). The intra-hospital mortality was higher among men (13.2%) than women (10.16%), resulting in a mortality rate by gender of 1.30, which is statistically significant. Conclusion: This study aimed to contribute to the role of Antonio Pedro University Hospital, as well as of the Brazilian public hospital network, in the oncology care area.
