PHARMACEUTICAL ATTENTION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE TREATMENT OF ASMATIC PATIENTS: an integrative review

The present study sought to present the effectiveness of Pharmaceutical Care in managing the treatment of asthmatic patients through an integrative literature review. For this purpose, a search was carried out for scientific articles published from 2001 to 2021, using the following search terms: “pharmaceutical attention” AND “asthma treatment management” OR “asthmatic patients” OR “inhalation devices in the PubMed database, Scielo and Google scholar. The inclusion criteria for the articles were qualitative and quantitative theoretical-methodological studies that proposed to analyze experience reports as well as clinical trials related to the topic published in the last twenty years. As a result, 14 studies were included. The data provided by these studies corroborate that Pharmaceutical Care can contribute to the adherence of asthmatic patients to treatment, so that they can learn to handle inhaler devices properly. From this, studies show that there is a reduction in the frequency and intensity of symptoms and to maintain control of the disease, and as an effect, achieve a better quality of life. It is concluded that Pharmaceutical Care is extremely important for the success of asthma therapy, as it can provide guided education on the importance of medication adherence, on its possible adverse effects, and on the appropriate techniques to deal with inhaler devices commonly used for asthma.
