PROFILE OF OMEPRAZOLE USERS IN A PRIVATE DRUG STORE NETWORK

Proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, are one of the most prescribed drug classes in the world, as they combine a high level of effectiveness in reducing gastric acidity with low toxicity. However, in addition to medical prescription, many people use these drugs by their own indication, and their prolonged use can bring some harm to the health of the user. The general objective of this study was to know the profile of omeprazole users among clients of a private pharmacy network, analyzing the form and frequency of omeprazole use in selected patients, as well as the factors that motivated the use of the drug, it is noteworthy that the project is approved by the Research Ethics Committee - Opinion No. 4.742.564.  The study included 50 participants, clients of the drugstore studied in the municipality of Presidente Olegário/ Minas Gerias, who have been using the drug omeprazole for more than six months. Of these, 84% are between 31 and 65 years old and 60% are female. When evaluating the indication for treatment with omeprazole, it was found that the majority (73%) used this drug on medical advice. In addition, 50% of respondents have been using omeprazole for more than three years. In these cases, the intervention of the pharmacist in providing guidance on the risks of self-medication and prolonged use of the drug, as well as in the referral of some patients to the specialist physician, is justified.
