THE ROLE OF THE DENTIST SURGEON IN THE ICU: oral care in the prevention of nosocomial pneumonia

Resumo: The oral cavity is the site of manifestation of several systemic diseases and can be considered the gateway to a variety of infections. One of them is nosocominal pneumonia, which consists of aspiration of bacteria from the oropharynx into the lungs after 48 to 72 hours of patient hospitalization. The objective of this study is to characterize nosocomial pneumonia and search the literature on the involvement and role of the dentist in the hospital environment. The research showed that the role of the dentist in the multidisciplinary team present in the Intensive Care Unit is essential for the care and prevention of this pathology. The bibliographic review was carried out in Pubmed, Scielo, Google Scholar databases and articles that address the subject.

Una de ellas es la neumonía nosocominal, que consiste en la aspiración de bacterias de la orofaringe a los pulmones después de 48 a 72 horas de hospitalización del paciente. El objetivo de este estudio es caracterizar la neumonía nosocomial y buscar en la literatura sobre la implicación y el papel del odontólogo en el ámbito hospitalario. La investigación demostró que el papel del odontólogo en el equipo multidisciplinario presente en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos es esencial para el cuidado y la prevención de esta patología. La revisión bibliográfica se realizó en bases de datos Pubmed, Scielo, Google Scholar y artículos que abordan el tema.A cavidade oral é o local de manifestação de diversas doenças sistêmicas e pode ser considerada porta de entrada para uma variedade de infecções. Uma delas é a pneumonia nosocominal, que consiste na aspiração de bactérias advindas da orofaringe para os pulmões após 48h a 72h de internação do paciente. O objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar a pneumonia nosocominal e pesquisar na literatura como é o envolvimento e o papel do cirurgião-dentista dentro do ambiente hospitalar. A pesquisa mostrou que a atuação do cirurgião-dentista na equipe multidisciplinar presente na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva é essencial para os cuidados e prevenção dessa patologia.
