“I thought everything would be different there”: representations of Brazil and foreign countries among students from Universidade Federal de Viçosa in the scholarship program Ciência sem Fronteiras

Resumo: The program Ciência sem Fronteiras became known worldwide for providing Brazilian students with scholarships that promoted international academic mobility into various countries, which enabled them direct contact with different cultures and customs. This paper analyzed the representations built by students in the scholarship program Ciencia sem Fronteiras, linked to the Agrarian Sciences Center of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa in its campus at Minas Gerais (MG), regarding their experience abroad and Brazil’s future. The methodology used was the qualitative approach, developed through bibliographical and documentary research, and online questionnaires. Results show that the participants expected to find abroad a better security, infrastructure, and quality of life, regarding both the cities and educational institutions. It was verified that they confirmed some of their expectations about the foreign countries, and situations occurred during the exchange that caused students to reassess the current Brazilian scenario. However, despite all the problems, some of which also present in other countries, Brazil is still represented as a promising country able to promote economic and social development, even if projected in the future.

Este artículo analizó las representaciones que los becarios del Programa Ciencia sin Fronteras, vinculados al Centro de Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad Federal de Viçosa, campus de Viçosa – Minas Gerais (MG), construyen sobre la experiencia en el extranjero y el futuro de Brasil. La metodología utilizada fue el enfoque cualitativo, desarrollado por medio de investigación bibliográfica y documental y de cuestionarios en línea. Los resultados muestran que los participantes esperaban encontrar una mejor calidad de vida y seguridad en el extranjero y mejor infraestructura en relación con las ciudades y las instituciones educativas. Se constató que se confirmaron algunas expectativas sobre el exterior, ocurriendo situaciones en el intercambio que hicieron que los estudiantes revalúen el escenario brasileño actual. Sin embargo, a pesar de todos los problemas, algunos de ellos encontrados también en otros países, Brasil todavía está representado como un país prometedor, con capacidad de promover el desarrollo económico y social, aunque proyectado en el futuro.O Programa Ciência sem Fronteiras ficou conhecido mundialmente por proporcionar aos estudantes brasileiros bolsas de mobilidade acadêmica internacional em diversos países, possibilitando um contato direto com culturas e costumes diferentes. Este artigo analisou as representações que os bolsistas do Programa Ciência sem Fronteiras, vinculados ao Centro de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, campus Viçosa – Minas Gerais (MG), constroem sobre a experiência no exterior e o futuro do Brasil. Utilizou-se como metodologia a abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvida por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e de questionários on-line. Os resultados demonstram que os participantes esperavam encontrar no exterior maior qualidade de vida e segurança e melhor infraestrutura em relação tanto às cidades quanto às instituições de ensino. Constatou-se que algumas expectativas sobre o exterior foram confirmadas, ocorrendo situações no intercâmbio que fizeram os estudantes reavaliarem o atual cenário brasileiro.
