Resumo: This paper examines the transformations of the East-Central European (ECE) automotive sector in the context of its integration into wider European production networks and focuses on the extent to which this has created opportunities for ECE firms to upgrade in these automotive production networks. The paper draws on global production networks (GPNs) research and makes use of international trade statistics to evaluate the relative shifts in the export of traded motor cars, parts and automotive components from ECE to the main European Union markets between 1995 and 2010. With evidence obtained from the analysis of the value and volume of exports the paper concludes that ECE countries have upgraded in particular categories of passenger cars, although this varies considerably from country to country and across product areas. Therefore, the study emphasises the significance of product-specific analysis to help us understand and determine the extent to which industrial upgrading is occurring in GPNs.

El artículo se inspira en investigaciones de redes de producción globales (RPG) y usa estadísticas del comercio internacional para evaluar los cambios relativos a la exportación de automóviles, repuestos y piezas automotores del ECE a los principales mercados de la Unión Europea entreel 1995 y el 2010. Con pruebas obtenidas del análisis del valor y el volumen de exportaciones, el artículo concluye que los países en el Este-Centro de Europa han mejorado en categoríasespeciales de coches de pasajeros, aunque hayan variaciones entre los países y entre los diferentes tipos de productos. Por lo tanto, el estudio enfatiza la importancia de un análisis específico al producto para ayudarnos a entender y determinar el grado en que el mejoramiento industrial ocurre en redes de producción globales. Este artigo examina as transformações do setor automotivo na região do Central e Leste Europeu (CLE) no contexto da sua integração às extensas redes de produção Europeias e se concentra em analisar se e como esses processos têm criado oportunidades para o upgrading das indústrias localizadas nesta região. O artigo se baseia na perspectiva das redes de produção globais (RPGs) e faz uso das estatísticas de comércio internacional para avaliar as mudanças relativas à exportação de automóveis, peças e componentes automotivos da região do CLE para os principais mercados da União Europeia entre os anos de 1995 e 2010. Com evidência obtida a partir da análise do valor e volume das exportações o artigo conclui que os países do CLE obtiveram um upgrade em determinadas categorias de automóveis, embora existam variações de país para país e entre as diferentes categorias de produtos.
