Study of Agricultural Dynamics on Paranavaí-PR Micro-region: a contribution of classical location theory

Resumo: The aim of this article is to analyze the transition from cassava cultivation to sugarcane cultivation in the micro-region of Paranavaí, state of Paraná, Brazil, after installation of the USAÇUCAR plant in the municipality of Terra Rica city, and to specifically present the key points of the classical location theories of von Thünen and Alfred Weber. The study period comprised harvests from 2005/2006 to 2009/2010. To evaluate full impact of the implementation of the plant, eight cities within a 30-km radius from the plant were analyzed. Results showed that there was a transition from cassava cultivation to sugarcane cultivation. Furthermore, cluster maps showed that the productive centre of cassava shifted from the municipality of Paranavaí to Alto Paraná (a municipality that is not within the study range), thus confirming the transition of cultures after installation of the plant. Lastly, results showed that the role of transportation and labour costs, and dependence on localized raw material is still of paramount importance to the problem of location of cassava and sugarcane crops in the micro-region of Paranavaí, which confirms the applicability of the classical location theories for the object of study.

La serie de análisis comprende los períodos 2005-2006 y 2009-2010. Para evaluar la real importancia de la inclusión de USAÇUCAR fueron estudiados ocho municipios localizados en los 30 Km de radio de la misma. De esta forma, el estudio concluye que hubo una mudanza de la cultura yuca para la de caña de azúcar después de la implantación de USAÇUCAR. Además, empleando mapas de Clústers fue posible identificar un desplazamiento del centro productivo de yuca del municipio de Paranavaí para el municipio Alto Paraná (localizado fuera del radio de estudio). Finalmente, se resalta la importancia de los costos de transporte, mano de obra e dependencia de materias primas para la problemática de localización de la cultura de yuca y de caña de azúcar en la micro-región de Paranavaí, confirmando los resultados de las teorías clásicas de localización.O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar a transição da cultura de mandioca para a de cana-de-açúcar na microrregião de Paranavaí após a instalação da usina USAÇUCAR no município de Terra Rica, e, especificamente, apresentar os principais pontos das Teorias Clássicas da Localização de Von Thünen e Alfred Weber. O período em análise compreende as safras 2005/2006 até 2009/2010. Para avaliar a real importância da inserção da usina foram analisados oito municípios localizados a um raio de 30 km da propriedade. Desse modo, o estudo conclui que houve uma mudança da cultura de mandioca para a de cana- de-açúcar. Além disso, utilizando-se de mapas de clusters, foi possível verificar um deslocamento do centro produtivo de mandioca do município de Paranavaí para Alto Paraná (um município não pertencente ao raio em questão), confirmando a transição entre as culturas após a instalação da usina.
