Methods of Regional Analysis: a study of location and specialization for the Southern Region of Brazil

Resumo: This article evaluates the specialization and concentration of activities and analyzes changes in the distribution of economic sectors and productive structures in the three states of southern Brazil from 2010 to 2015 from the formal employment standpoint. Specialization is evaluated based on the locational quotient. Concentration is determined by the location coefficient. Changes in the distribution of sectors in time are assessed from the redistribution coefficient. Changes in the productive structure are assessed from the restructuring coefficient. Data was obtained from the annual social information report (Relação Anual de Informações Sociais - RAIS). The results show that the state of Paraná excelled in agriculture specialization, Rio Grande do Sul in public administration and industrial services, and Santa Catarina in mining and manufacturing. The coefficient of localization indicates no concentration pattern in any activity. The redistribution coefficient indicates no changes in the geographical distribution of activities from 2010 to 2015. The restructuring coefficient showed that none of the three states underwent structural production changes from 2010 to 2015.

La especialización se evalúa a partir del cociente de localización; la concentración se determina por el coeficiente de ubicación; el cambio de la distribución de los sectores en el tempo, a través del coeficiente de redistribución y el cambio en la estructura de producción, por medio del coeficiente de reestructuración. Los datos fueron recolectados en el Anual de Informaciones Sociales (RAIS). Los resultados del estudio demostraron que el estado de Paraná se destacó en la especialización en la agricultura; Rio Grande do Sul, en la administración pública y los servicios industriales, y Santa Catarina en las industrias de extracción y procesamiento de minerales. El coeficiente de localización indica que no hay un patrón de concentración en ninguna actividad; el coeficiente de redistribución apunta que no hubo cambios en el patrón espacial de la localización de las actividades desde el 2010 hasta 2015, y el coeficiente de reestructuración muestra que los tres estados no presentaron cambios en su estructura productiva del 2010 al 2015.Este artigo avalia a especialização e a concentração das atividades e analisa as mudanças na distribuição dos setores econômicos e na estrutura produtiva nos três estados da Região Sul do Brasil no período de 2010 a 2015 a partir do emprego formal. A especialização é avaliada a partir do quociente locacional, a concentração é determinada pelo coeficiente de localização, a mudança da distribuição dos setores no tempo por meio do coeficiente de redistribuição, e a mudança na estrutura produtiva através do coeficiente de reestruturação. Os dados foram obtidos na Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (RAIS). Os resultados da pesquisa mostraram que o Estado do Paraná se destacava na especialização na agropecuária, o Rio Grande do Sul na administração pública e serviços industriais, e Santa Catarina no extrativismo mineral e indústrias de transformação.
