New Actors in the Ecological Agriculture Movement

Resumo: The main purpose of this paper is to show how the ecological subfield took shape in the Brazilian agriculture and how it represents a way of confronting a hegemonic agricultural and food order that expanded through scientific and technological development following the political and economic interests of certain actors. A socially non inclusive and environmentally unsustainable agriculture was so forged. The concept of “field” within the contemporary sociological theory is used in this analysis as a confrontation between political actors on behalf of the ecological and agroindustrial models, respectively. We also highlight how the landless agricultural workers movement (Movimento dos trabalhadores Sem-Terra, MST) has been attracted to the ecological subfield, given that the organization is a political actor. Finally, we stress that ecological agriculture has been an important strategy to fostering food sovereignty and security.

El análisis apunta que ese subcampo surge como una manera de enfrentar la hegemonía del modelo agrícola y alimentario instituido globalmente y construido a lo largo del tiempo con el desarrollo científico y tecnológico, a través de los paquetes tecnológicos, que están orientados por los intereses políticos y económicos de algunos agentes. Ello fomenta una agricultura socialmente excluyente y ambientalmente insustentable, contribuyendo a la inseguridad alimentaria. Con eso, el artículo retoma el concepto de campo de la teoría sociológica contemporánea para analizar las confrontaciones establecidas entre los agentes políticos que representan el modelo ecológico, de un lado, y el modelo agroindustrial, de otro. Buscamos destacar el direccionamiento del Movimiento de los Trabajadores Rurales Sin Tierra (MST) para el subcampo ecológico, entendiendo que ese movimiento se convierte en un importante agente político. Se concluye que la agricultura ecológica es una estrategia de fomento a la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria.O artigo busca discutir a formação do subcampo ecológico na agricultura brasileira. A análise indica que este subcampo ecológico surgiu como forma de confrontar a hegemonia do modelo agrícola e alimentar global, construído ao longo do tempo com desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico, através dos pacotes tecnológicos, e que está orientado pelos interesses políticos e econômicos de determinados agentes, o que fomenta uma agricultura socialmente excludente e ambientalmente insustentável, conduzindo à insegurança alimentar. Retoma-se, aqui, o conceito de campo da teoria sociológica contemporânea para analisar os confrontos estabelecidos entre os agentes políticos que representam o modelo ecológico e, por outro lado, o modelo agroindustrial. Procura-se destacar o direcionamento do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais sem Terra (MST) para o subcampo ecológico, entendendo que este movimento representa um importante agente político.
