Clinical, therapeutic and medication aspects of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA): an integrative literature review

To highlight the care plans for patients with SMA, demonstrating statistical data about SMA, informing about possible treatments for SMA and discussing the systematization and care provided to patients with SMA. This is an integrative literature review, with articles selected through electronic data, such as Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS), and the use of DECS/MeSH in search of the following descriptors: “nursing”; “spinal muscular atrophy”. 14 scientific articles were selected, in which they debated on subjects that were organized and divided by categories, in which those with knowledge about the proposed theme were considered the most important, in order to obtain a set of propositions and conclusions from the authors selected. SMA is a rare disease, in which there is a genetic diagnostic study that should be performed in its treatment. The diversification of complications that it can determine requires a broader and more coordinated approach to the patient. Medical follow-up and palliative care, together, are important procedures throughout the life of patients with the disease. With this, a plan must be developed that contains teamwork, with multidisciplinary health professionals, in which each professional develops complementary actions, favoring the treatment of patients.
