Resumo: Character strengths are positive human characteristics seen as an inner determinant for a life of satisfaction, happiness and well-being. Given the relevance and breadth of the topic, this systematic review aimed to present a survey of national and international empirical research from the last 10 years (2013 to 2023), which addressed the relationship between character strengths and well-being, investigating which type of well-being was most cited, which instruments were used, who the participants were and which character strengths most correlated with well-being in each study. The research was carried out on the Periodical Portal of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), using the descriptors “character strengths” and “well-being” in the title in Portuguese and English. The final sample was composed of 9 empirical studies, 2 Brazilian and 7 international. From the literature review, we identified that character strengths in general contribute to the well-being of human beings, and that there is more research on subjective well-being and with a quantitative design. According to the studies analyzed, the 5 forces that are most positively related to well-being are: gratitude, hope, kindness, spirituality and enthusiasm. We identified similarities and differences in instruments for measuring character strengths and well-being and concluded that research addressing the relationship between these two constructs is still scarce.
