Resumo: There is a high prevalence of mental disorders identified in the prenatal and puerperal periods that affect women's health. The nursing care offered to these women should range from reproductive planning to postpartum, following the recommendations of the protocols and taking into account the psychological aspects that involve women's health. Thus, this article aims to answer the following question: do prenatal and postpartum care teams act in the prevention and promotion of pregnant women's mental health? Objective: To identify evidence from the literature on the role of nurses in mental health care from the beginning of pregnancy to the puerperium, main related problems and risk factors. Methods: Exploratory and qualitative study, carried out through bibliographic research, with selected articles from the year 2000 to 2020, in the SCIELO databases. Results: 28 articles were located and 6 were selected, which demonstrated the risk factors, protection factors and the lack of training of professionals of the Family Health Teams. Conclusion: publications on nursing activities aimed at improving mental health care for pregnant and postpartum women are still insufficient to establish scientific evidence and support public policies that address mental health.

Results: 28 articles were located and 6 were selected, which demonstrated the risk factors, protection factors and the lack of training of professionals of the Family Health Teams. Conclusion: publications on nursing activities aimed at improving mental health care for pregnant and postpartum women are still insufficient to establish scientific evidence and support public policies that address mental health.
