Resumo: The act of reading -in this research- that not only the decoding of the written message but also the reading of the world in which it is inserted is a social practice that is present in the lives of all people, are aware of this fact or not. This is because, in essence, reading is one of the processes that makes possible the participation of man in life in society, because reading is to participate more actively and critically in human relations. Thus, reading as social practice and reading practices in the school are actions that are directly related, since both constitute through the modes of dialogue of the subject-reader with the senses of construction and reconstruction present in the text the essential condition for the constitution of autonomy of the subject.

O ato de ler é o processo de construir significado a partir do texto. Para isso o leitor utiliza na leitura seus conhecimentos prévios, seus saberes linguístico e textual e o conhecimento de mundo. Desde modo, é a partir da interação desses conhecimentos que se consegue construir o sentido do texto. Mas, a partir do momento em que se tem consciência que um dos grandes problemas da educação brasileira é que muitos alunos chegam à vida adulta sem desenvolver as habilidades básicas para ler e o gosto pela leitura, torna-se necessária e urgente uma reflexão sobre a finalidade da leitura que será enfocada neste estudo sob dois aspectos: leitura como prática social e práticas de leitura na escola. Tendo, como meta mostrar que ambas estão diretamente inter-relacionadas e que se constituem através das modalidades de diálogo do sujeito leitor com os sentidos que se estabelecem por meio de suas leituras de mundo.
