NURSING ASSISTANCE TO PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that has a greater clinical manifestation in the elderly. The pathology is characterized by having a slow evolution and causing several compromises in the different systems, such as cognitive deterioration, changes in behavior and several neuropsychiatric symptoms. The aim of this study is, through recent literature, to evaluate the role of professional nurses in the face of the problem and to highlight the importance of nursing care to patients with AD. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review. The searches for the articles were carried out in the BEDEN and FLILACS databases. The inclusion criteria, previously established in the strategy, were available articles published in the last 5 years (2016 to 2020), in Portuguese and in full, original articles and articles related to the research problem; 2 works from gray literature were included, as they were part of the objective of this work. Result: The 9 works included in this integrative literature review allowed the definition of concepts and the discussion of three themes: Quality of life of the elderly with AD; The impact of the disease on family relationships; and The importance of the nursing team in managing care for patients with AD. Conclusion: As the disease progresses, the person with AD becomes dependent on another person. It appears that nursing care goes beyond the elderly with pathology, it is necessary to pay attention to those who care for them.
