Introduction: Pre-hospital care (PHC) can be defined as the provision of medical and nursing care to patients who need immediate medical assistance, such as in emergency and urgent situations outside the hospital environment. Objective: To analyze the elements alluded to in the historical review of literature that address the progress of APH, in order to suggest improvements in the current situation. Methodology: This is a literature review and descriptive study of a historical-social nature, prepared by means of a survey of journals from the Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, as well as the Database on Nursing (BDENF) and the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). Results and Discussion: This study discussed the evolution of Pre-hospital Care over time, through a historical-descriptive overview of the course of APH practices - from Larrey to the creation of SAMU - until its application today (especially in Brazil). The study aimed to provide important information about the progress of pre-hospital care throughout history. Conclusions: It is expected with this study that the practice of APH will be gradually improved in view of the needs of incident victims, so that the nurse's performance, in the circumstances submitted to it, will be more efficient for the conditions of the current scenario.
