Resumo: Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that mainly affects the cognitive and behavioral functions of the elderly, interfering with the quality of life of patients and relatives. Objective: to evaluate the challenges faced by nurses who care for people with Alzheimer’s disease. It also sought to analyze the nursing care needed to promote the health and quality of life of the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease, identify the main risk factors associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly and finally develop educational strategies to raise awareness of the family about Alzheimer’s disease. Methodology: The research was done in sources such as PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). Dissertations, books and relevant works on the highlighted topic were also used in this review. Results and Discussions: the main treatments for Alzheimer’s disease focus on two main objectives: prevention of the disease and relief of symptoms. The nursing approach with care throughout the evolution of Alzheimer’s disease should include early identification of warning signs and symptoms of the disease, assessment of mental health and functional status. Conclusion: nursing has an essential role in caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, from prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease, to education and support to family caregivers.
