Resumo: | Considering the emergency and the rising of the concept of competence during the last two decades, this paper aims to discuss its implications in the relationship between workers and companies, regarding the changes in the conceptual, social and experimental dimensions of qualification due to the introduction of the concept of competence in a company. In order to describe this phenomenon, a case study has been made in the locomotive maintenance area of a large mining and logistic company. The data was collected from company documents and from semistructured interviews, and to interpret such data, the content’s qualitative analysis from pre-established categories was used. The study revealed that the usage of the concept of competence in company management tends to individualize the relationship between workers and companies by weakening the conceptual and social dimensions of qualification. |

The study revealed that the usage of the concept of competence in company management tends to individualize the relationship between workers and companies by weakening the conceptual and social dimensions of qualification.Considerando a emergência e ascensão da noção da competência nos discursos acadêmicos e empresariais a partir das duas últimas décadas do século passado, este artigo tem como objetivo central discutir seus efeitos nas relações entre trabalhadores e empresa, com base nas modificações nas dimensões conceitual, social e experimental da qualificação, com a introdução da noção de competência em uma empresa. Para descrever esse fenômeno, foi realizado um estudo de caso na área de manutenção de locomotivas de uma grande empresa de mineração e logística. Os dados foram levantados com base em documentos da empresa e em entrevistas semi estruturadas, e, para sua interpretação, utilizou-se a análise qualitativa de conteúdo a partir de categorias preestabelecidas.
